ACLU Issues Travel Advisory for West Palm Beach

Immigration Attorney West Palm Beach

On April 8, 2019, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) issued a travel advisory warning immigrants and members of minority groups to avoid traveling to Florida. This action was taken in response to Florida Senate Bill 168 and House Bill 527, which are currently being considered by the Florida State Legislature. Both these bills are designed to target sanctuary cities and to enact policies that would force local governments to cooperate with and, in some cases, to enforce immigration laws on behalf of federal agencies.

West Palm Beach Specifically Named in Advisory

A news release from the ACLU of Florida named West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Key West specifically as areas to avoid for immigrants and people of color. The progress of House Bill 527 and Senate Bill 168 have created serious concerns for the ACLU and other immigration advocacy groups regarding the likelihood of racial profiling, unjustified detention and deportation for individuals targeted by federal immigration agencies and detained by local law enforcement in our area.
