ICE Completes Major Immigration Sweep in Northern California

Detained by ICE

In a sign that enforcement activity is still on the rise, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials arrested 232 people in the state of California during a four-day operation. According to Thomas Homan, the acting director of ICE, about 800 individuals eluded federal authorities thanks to a warning by Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf on Twitter. Oakland is a sanctuary city with strong protections in place for undocumented immigrants who live and work there.

Placing the Blame

ICE was quick to go on the attack against Schaaf, stating that her actions put federal agents at risk and prevented the capture of dangerous criminals in the northern California area. Homan also blamed California laws protecting immigrants for the tactics used by ICE, saying, “ICE has no choice but to continue at-large arrests in local neighborhoods and at worksites.” In many sanctuary cities, ICE agents are not allowed free and open access to prisoners without a court order and are not provided information by local authorities about the immigration status of those in custody in these jurisdictions.

Large-Scale Immigration Sweeps Becoming the Norm

In the state of Florida, ICE activities have become increasingly more invasive and have hit close to home for many local residents. Consulting with a West Palm Beach immigration lawyer can be a proactive step toward resolving immigration issues and ensuring a brighter future for families and individuals in our area. By beginning the process to achieve legal residency, you may be able to avoid issues with ICE and possible deportation by this federal agency.
